About our Mission and Ministry

A church for prayer, worship and social connection

Sacraments

Restored by Vicar William Bennett from 1852-1886 in the Anglo-Catholic tradition, this church has a sacramental heart which sees the sacraments as the ongoing, outworking of Jesus Christ to the world.

Prayer and Worship

Alongside the sacraments, we have a number of other forms of worship throughout the week, to which all are welcome. We also realise not everyone feels able to express themselves in formal worship, therefore our church is always open for people who want to take time to quietly pray, meditate or reflect, and we have numerous prayer stations around the church to help you to encounter God.

Community Service

The Christian's response to God in their lives can take many forms. We are privileged to have a range of groups, each with an active ministry in our church. From the book group to craft afternoons and an active gardening group, there are many options for social connection within the church.

Town Outreach

We aim to make a significant contribution to our civic and cultural life here in Frome. Every year we hold a traditional Well Dressing at the top of Cheap Street. We welcome school visits into church regularly. We are a collection point for the Christmas Shoe Box Appeal, we support a number of local charities, and are working on links with the YMCA and other local organisations. We hold regular services at the local hospital, as well as being here for major life events such as baptisms, weddings and funerals.

History and Legacy

Founded by St Aldhelm with a mission to baptise and maintain Christian faith within the local community, St John's is privileged to have traces of over a thousand years of history in its architecture, art and stained glass. Having endured the major events of UK history and ministered to by historic greats such as St Aldhelm, Bishop Thomas Ken and Vicar William Bennett, we have a rich history and legacy to help you encounter something of the history and culture of Frome, the UK and the Church of England.

Open and Inclusive

As the original church of Frome, St John's takes pride in being a place which is open and welcoming of all people. We celebrate the diversity of economic power, gender, mental health, physical ability, race and sexuality, and seek to draw people into a loving, liberating relationship with God, the church and each other. No matter who you are, this church is open every day for you, and you are welcome to join us in our prayer, worship and Christian witness.

The church goes out

Nothing that we do in church is purely for our own edification, but is a gift that we are asked to go out and share. The life and worship of St John's is there to prefigure what Christians are meant to be in the wider world, and we hope that we each of us take what we receive in St John's and use it to help build God's kingdom in the midst of our family, friends and community.

Education

We do not allow our Christian faith to remain static, but are excited that Christ is always calling us into a deeper understanding of Him and our Christian faith. Throughout the year we participate in Bible studies, education series and one-off talks to help us grow in our Christian knowledge.
