Tenebrae means darkness or shadows. The office is based on the ancient services of Matins and Lauds as recited in the last three days of Holy Week. The most conspicuous feature of the service is the gradual extinguishing of the Tenebrae Candles, until only one candle representing our Lord remains alight.
